Buenos Aires Map Poster: the Paris of South America, mapped
Why Buenos Aires works so well as a map poster
Buenos Aires has a grid so vast and regular that it feels almost infinite: blocks of identical size in every direction, punctuated by grand diagonals, most famously Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the widest streets in the world. The Río de la Plata forms the eastern edge, so wide it looks like an ocean on the map.
The uniformity is the beauty: it creates a hypnotic, textile-like pattern that fills the poster edge to edge, then the diagonals of Avenida de Mayo, Santa Fe and Corrientes cut through like streaks of energy. La Boca sits to the south where the Riachuelo curves; the Puerto Madero docks jut into the river.
Best palettes for Buenos Aires
- Warm Beige — elegant and understated, matching the Parisian-influenced architecture of Recoleta and Palermo.
- Pastel Dream — the coloured houses of La Boca, the jacaranda-lined streets in spring; soft pinks warm up the grid.
- Gradient Roads — a modern, stylised look that turns the endless grid into a colour field with the avenues standing out.
Where to centre the map and which radius to use
Centre on the Obelisco with a 6 km radius: the 9 de Julio runs straight through the middle, the diagonals fan out from the Plaza de Mayo and the river fills the right edge.

Which size to print
City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
