Rome Map Poster: seven hills, the Tiber and two thousand years of streets
Why Rome works so well as a map poster
Rome's street plan is a palimpsest: imperial roads, medieval alleys, Renaissance axes and baroque squares all layered on top of each other. The Tiber cuts a lazy S through the middle, and the voids of the Forum, the Colosseum and Villa Borghese give the density room to breathe.
On a map poster that history reads as texture. The centro storico is a knot of tiny irregular blocks, Prati and EUR answer with rational grids, and the parks and the river bend give the composition its rhythm. Few cities look this alive from above.
Best palettes for Rome
- Warm Beige — the colour of travertine and Roman afternoon light; the signature choice for Rome.
- Midnight Blue — deep navy with luminous streets — Rome at night from a rooftop terrace.
- Noir — strips the eternal city down to pure pattern; striking in modern interiors.
Where to centre the map and which radius to use
Centre on Piazza Venezia with a 5 km radius: the Vatican, Trastevere, the Forum and Villa Borghese all make it into the frame with the Tiber winding through the middle. Drop to 3 km for a print that is all centro storico.

Which size to print
City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
