Istanbul Map Poster: where two continents meet on your wall

Why Istanbul works so well as a map poster

Istanbul is the only major city that straddles two continents. The Bosphorus cuts the map vertically, Europe on the left and Asia on the right, and the Golden Horn branches off to form a natural Y shape that makes this one of the most dramatic city maps you can hang.

The density is extraordinary: streets cascade down hillsides, the old city of Sultanahmet and the Grand Bazaar sits on a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, and across the Golden Horn, Beyoğlu and Galata climb steeply. A map poster captures that topographic drama better than any photograph.

Best palettes for Istanbul

  • Copper Patina — aged, oxidised warmth: Ottoman domes, old brass in the bazaar, centuries of layered history.
  • Terracotta — earthy tones that match the rooftops and minarets of the skyline.
  • Sunset — warm golds and oranges, like watching the sun set over the Bosphorus from a rooftop in Cihangir.

Where to centre the map and which radius to use

Centre on the Galata Bridge with a 6 km radius so the Golden Horn, the historic peninsula, Beyoğlu and the first kilometres of the Asian shore all fit. The water does the composing for you.

Which size to print

City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
