About the Rome map
seven hills, the Tiber and two thousand years of streets
Rome's street plan is a palimpsest: imperial roads, medieval alleys, Renaissance axes and baroque squares all layered on top of each other. The Tiber cuts a lazy S through the middle, and the voids of the Forum, the Colosseum and Villa Borghese give the density room to breathe.
On a map poster that history reads as texture. The centro storico is a knot of tiny irregular blocks, Prati and EUR answer with rational grids, and the parks and the river bend give the composition its rhythm. Few cities look this alive from above.
