San Diego Map Poster: a bay, a bridge and canyons cutting the grid
Why San Diego works so well as a map poster
San Diego's map is organised by its bay. The water curls around downtown like a protective arm, with the long sandy hook of Coronado closing it off and the Coronado Bridge leaping across in a graceful arc. Downtown's compact grid meets the waterfront at the Embarcadero, and the runways of the airport draw hard straight lines along the shore.
Inland, the geometry gets more interesting than people expect: the big green rectangle of Balboa Park anchors the frame, and the mesas of Hillcrest, North Park and Golden Hill are repeatedly sliced by finger canyons, so the grid frays into organic gaps. Ocean order on one side, canyon wildness on the other.
Best palettes for San Diego
- Ocean — the signature pick: Pacific blues that make the bay and Coronado the stars of the frame.
- Warm Beige — sun-washed neutrals, like the light on a Mission Beach afternoon.
- Midnight Blue — the harbour lights at night, glowing against dark water.
Where to centre the map and which radius to use
Centre on Balboa Park with a 6 km radius so the park sits at the heart of the poster while downtown, the Embarcadero, the airport runways, the Coronado Bridge and the bay all fall naturally into the lower half of the frame.

Which size to print
City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
