Zurich Map Poster: where the Limmat leaves the lake
Why Zurich works so well as a map poster
Zurich's composition is a gift: the lake enters the frame from the south like a broad blue wedge, narrows to a point at the Bürkliplatz, and becomes the Limmat, which threads the old town's two banks before curving away north-west.
Either side of that waterline, the city climbs — the Niederdorf's medieval lanes on the right bank, the banking district and Bahnhofstrasse on the left, and the wooded ridges of Uetliberg and Zürichberg framing everything in green.
Best palettes for Zurich
- Noir — Swiss precision in black and white — the signature pick.
- Blueprint — watchmaker linework for a watchmaking country.
- Midnight Blue — the lake glows like dark glass after sunset.
Where to centre the map and which radius to use
Centre on Paradeplatz with a 5 km radius: the lake's wedge takes the lower third and the Limmat draws a bright line up the middle. Zurich is compact — 3 km makes a beautiful old-town-only print too.

Which size to print
City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
