About the Chicago map
the grid, the lake, the river
Chicago has one of the most satisfying grids in the world: block after block of right angles stretching to the horizon, interrupted only by Lake Michigan's dramatic eastern edge and the Y-shaped fork of the Chicago River downtown. That interplay of rigid geometry and water is what makes the poster so striking.
The lakefront is the anchor, a long smooth curve along the whole eastern side with Grant Park, Navy Pier and the Museum Campus as indentations. Inland the grid is relentless and beautiful, sliced by diagonals like Milwaukee and Archer that create wedge-shaped intersections.
Noir: Chicago has always been a noir city: dark, industrial, atmospheric, the lake as negative space.
Centre on the Loop with a 6 km radius so the lakefront runs down the whole right edge of the print and the river fork sits at the heart. Portrait orientation suits the north-south shoreline.
