About the Milan map
concentric rings around a Gothic heart
Milan is a target: rings of boulevards — the Cerchia dei Navigli, the Spanish walls, the circonvallazione — radiating out from the Duomo, crossed by avenues that shoot toward the Alps. The Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione punch a green wedge into the pattern.
It is one of Europe's most satisfying maps to hang: rational, dense and almost perfectly circular, with the Navigli canals adding two diagonal strokes of character in the south-west.
Noir: Milan is fashion's capital — black-on-black is its natural palette.
Centre on the Duomo with a 5 km radius: the rings read perfectly and both Sempione and the Navigli make the frame. At 3 km you get a tighter, almost circular composition that works beautifully in a square-ish room.
