About the Cologne map

a Roman semicircle on the Rhine

Cologne's plan is a textbook of two thousand years of city-making. The Rhine sweeps through in a broad curve, and on the left bank the streets fan out in concentric half-rings: the Roman core by the cathedral, the medieval semicircle traced by the Ringe boulevards, and the green belt beyond marking the nineteenth-century fortifications.

The cathedral itself anchors the composition right beside the main station, with the Hohenzollern Bridge carrying its famous rail arcs across the river to Deutz on the right bank; upstream and down, a procession of bridges gives the Rhine a steady rhythm through the frame.

Warm Beige: the signature pick: soft, timeless tones that let the semicircular plan speak.

Centre on Cologne Cathedral with a 5 km radius so the full semicircle of the Ringe, the green belt, Deutz and a long stretch of the Rhine with its bridges all sit comfortably in frame.
